Today, in all classes, the re-quiz policy was discussed and written down by all students. This is the same policy that was explained to parents who attended the Open House prior to the school year. For those who will be attending the PTSA open house (9/22/2015), it will also be briefly explained there.
Please refer to the graphic below. Note: students who score 80 or higher on SOL quizzes are NOT required to re-quiz; however, a student may do so if he/she wants to earn extra points. Hey everyone! This week, we'll be diving into the next logical unit after mastering the writing and simplifying of ratios; by learning how to compare, order, and convert fractions, decimals, and percents (SOL 6.2), students will be prepared to use a variety of values, and also change them to suit their needs. Please refer to the homework calendar on the main page for details on how we will practice these skills! Reminders: 1. There will be a multiplication quiz on Fridays for the next three weeks! 2. An exact date for the SOL 6.2 quiz has not been set; when it is, I will post and announce. The plan is to spend about two weeks studying SOL 6.2. 3. EXTRA CREDIT ANNOUNCEMENT! Mr. K is crafty! (well, his wife is) Bring in a pair(s) of jeans that are not being used (school-aged size and up) and receive a LOW QUIZ DROP for the 1st 9 weeks! The jeans will be made into a long-lasting, creative calculator/item holder for Mr. K's class. And, it's even more awesome because we'll be RECYCLING! 4. There will be a COOL parent/student night at the VMASC facilty (Virginia Modeling and Simulation Center, in Northern Suffolk) very soon. See this link for details- you might even see MR. K there! 5. The videos for SOL 6.2 are found below. Notes will be checked Friday, September 25th. There will be a video session that day for students who need to view videos in school. Hey everyone! Thanks for stopping by! As part of my efforts to create as many classroom instructional minutes as possible, I use a concept called "flipped classroom instruction." Check out some examples and explanations of the concept here: http://www.radford.edu/content/radfordcore/home/news/releases/2013/October/flipped-dlassroom-learning.html http://cft.vanderbilt.edu/guides-sub-pages/flipping-the-classroom/ http://lodgemccammon.com/flip/ To this end, I have transitioned the majority of my notetaking workload to outside normal school hours, by providing brief, concise videos of relevant skills on my website, our (eventual) Google Classroom site, and/or my YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyciRe7TxV8lWuXy6nfYBgA). To reach all of my students, the following policies are put in place: 1. ALL STUDENTS HAVE EQUAL OPPORTUNITY TO ACCESS CONTENT. Whether students access videos at home, on a mobile device using Wi-Fi, at a friend's house, OR AT SCHOOL (when need exists), no student will be denied math content- ever. I typically offer a VIDEO SESSION for all classes during lunchtime once per unit. I am also available to pull students from PE, if necessary. 2. ALL VIDEOS ARE EASILY ACCESSIBLE, ON ANY DEVICE/PLATFORM. All videos are found on YouTube, which is universally accessible. Please see the link above. 3. VIDEO NOTES COUNT AS A HOMEWORK GRADE. Questions? Please let me know. As situations arise, I am committed to ensuring EVERYONE has a positive experience AND gets a world-class education! SOL 6.1 (Simplifying, Naming, and Writing Ratios) Video Selections: Please watch the videos below, take notes, and be ready to show them to Mr. K on Tuesday, September 15th. OR, you can watch this SINGLE video: It's SHOWTIME!WELCOME TO JOHN YEATES MIDDLE SCHOOL! I'm so happy to have a great group of young minds to work with for the 2015-16 school year. We'll spend ten months together, so any information you can provide me to make your math adventure more productive, please let me know- I'm talking to all of you (parents, students, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, creepy neighbor across the street, etc.)!
The beginning of the year is spent learning routines, observing students and how they react to me, math content, their peers, and also learning how to be organized. Some IMPORTANT notes for the first week: 1. I want to know about YOU! See the main website page (mrkteachesstem.weebly.com) and click on "student info form and complete it! Parents who complete by September 14th earn a FREE homework pass for their child! Thanks! (this form can also be accessed by the link provided in open house, by the link given to students on the first few days of school, and I will also email it out and send via Remind) 2. STAY CONNECTED during the year! Sign up for Remind messages (homework, announcements, news, etc to your mobile device or email). Information will be given in open house sessions and in class. Sorry, can't post it here! 3. STAY CONNECTED during the year, part two! Check this site for my HOMEWORK CALENDAR on the main page. Students will also be given Google Accounts that can also link to this calendar- stay tuned. 4. I am not particular about required school supplies. If you have supplies, great. If you don't, get some. If you can't get supplies, see me...we'll figure something out! I will not let school supplies stress anyone! HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND! And, get some sleep...you're going to need it. Just the facts.
6th Grade SOL Test: May 18, 2015 Review Resources: http://eduwidgets.org/#/widgets/1877 cool interactive test review using a WIDGET (http://eduwidgets.org) https://vastatic.testnav.com/vaqc/epatLogin.jsp?testnavTestId=EP6M&testnavFormId=C1 online test practice https://vastatic.testnav.com/vatrngqc/epatLogin.jsp?testnavTestId=TR6136&testnavFormId=MCTP4 Online test practice http://www.doe.virginia.gov/testing/sol/practice_items/mathematics/guides/gr_6_math.pdf paper test practice http://www.doe.virginia.gov/testing/sol/released_tests/2013/gr_6_math_released_in_spring_2014.pdf paper test http://www.doe.virginia.gov/testing/sol/blueprints/mathematics_blueprints/2009/blueprint_math6.pdf test blueprint (what's going to be on the test?!) http://www.doe.virginia.gov/testing/test_administration/cat/index.shtml# A guide to adaptive testing (Math Grade 6 is piloting this format this spring) Congratulations! You've made it to the end of the school year! As we begin SOL 6.14 (circle graphs), we're beginning to figure out how to gear up for the SOL test on May 18th. We've had some great practice already (MAP tests; ongoing review; a great teacher), but we're not done yet! As I always say, YOU'VE ALREADY PASSED THE TEST. NOW, JUST PROVE IT! Take a look at the video resources below. Video notes will be due Monday, with a session at lunch that day. We will likely use the Khan links in class on Monday. Good day! It has been a while since I've made a post on this site. The inclement weather, spring break, and other scheduling factors have made it difficult to update, and there hasn't been too much to tell, besides homework (which can be found on the Google calendar on the main page). But, since we are beginning to wind down SOL content, with three standards left on the slate, I figured some resources and announcements would be a good start to the after-break part of this school year. Announcements: 1. THE SOL TEST WILL NOW BE ADMINISTERED ON MAY 18TH (MONDAY). Sorry for the all caps, but this is important! 2. Next Quiz- SOL 6/15- April 21st (Tuesday)...Mean, median, mode, balance point 3. The City Council meeting will take place Wednesday evening. Please show your support for education, and the best teachers in Suffolk, by asking the Council to fully fund the education budget! We will be there- so should our great parents! 4. Take a look BELOW for some great video resources on SOL 6.15. 5. Good Khan Academy resource here- https://www.khanacademy.org/math/probability/descriptive-statistics/central_tendency/v/statistics-intro-mean-median-and-mode I am not going to bother to predict how this week will end...so, the homework calendar (main page) will be updated if/when we are in school. While you're home, why not study your BLUE BOOK- the SOL 6.11 section, do some research on Cartesian coordinate planes and Rene Descartes, and do some homework...
Oh, and have some fun in the snow! Be safe, tk |
