Hey everyone! As we wind down 2015, we prepare for our second benchmark test, mentioned in the last post. As was discussed in class today, the test looks like this: -40 items -multiple-choice -10 questions non-calculator; 30 questions calculator-enabled -10 old questions (6.1; 6.2; 6.4; 6.6...from 1st 9 weeks) -30 new questions (5 questions each from SOL 6.16, 6.7, 6.5, 6.17, 6.19, and 6.8) Please note: we will be reviewing this week leading up to Thursday's test by looking at our blue books, working on group-based review packets, and (hopefully) making corrections to old quizzes to not only learn from our mistakes, but to also take RE-QUIZZES! Please refer to Mr. K's YouTube channel for useful videos as review and remediation! AND NOW, TO SOME GREAT NEWS FOR NEXT YEAR!!! 1. Check out www.sumdog.com , when you get a chance. I'd like to know if you'd like to enter some math competitions (as a class) to earn prizes and get some GREAT online practice! ANYONE BRINGING ME PROOF OF WORKING ON THE SITE WILL RECEIVE 2 FREE HOMEWORK PASSES FOR THE MONTH OF JANUARY! I have created accounts for all of my students, but you can work without it, for now. 2. Curious about taking REAL college courses on topics you enjoy? Need some CHALLENGE in my class- because you're feeling bored? Everything seems EASY? Have you thought about learning how to code- make your own apps and games? Design your own website? Do you want to EARN FREE COLLEGE CREDIT, just for working on your computer at home? CHECK OUT https://www.edx.org/ . EdX is a non-profit founded at MIT in 2012 that helps students find the courses they need to gain skills, knowledge, and experience in what they WANT to learn! I WANT TO HELP YOU HAVE FUN LEARNING! Is there a way to give you credit in MY CLASS for this??? I am working that out with Mr. O. Let's have fun! |

Hey everyone! Just some information about the upcoming Benchmark Test: -40 items -Multiple Choice -WIll cover all taught material this school year (see attached blueprint for more information)
Our last taught standard for the calendar year, SOL 6.8, concerning Order of Operations, is currently being studied in class. This is a skill taught in fifth grade, and since it is largely review, we are taking a well-deserved break from the rigor of the first 9 weeks! See the video below for information. QUICK POST REGARDING NEW SPS INITIATIVE!
SPS will now be using a program called PEACHJAR to deliver all paper-based flyers to you electronically, which will mean the district will save tons of money on paper and copying costs...this is a good thing! See the article below from the SPS website for more information. http://staff.spsk12.net/2015/11/29/coming-soon-to-your-fingertips/_ HAPPY DECEMBER! Thank you for bearing with a recent absence due to surgery! I was sure to show as many students, that could handle it, the battle scar that is currently being formed. For those not in the know, I ruptured my Achilles tendon, requiring surgical intervention. An example of such a procedure can be found below. (Note: it is not for those with weak stomachs). That said, I am happy to be back. After taking a close look at the SOL 6.5 quiz given in my absence, and taking into account that I was present for only the introduction of the unit, I am pleased with the results. Though there are some students that SHOULD re-quiz, the fact that class averages were at or higher than a B is very positive news. Some things to remember: 1. Students who QUALIFY FOR and TAKE REQUIZZES get higher scores in my class. 2. If I am the only person, between you and me, who cares if you do well in my class, THAT IS NOT ENOUGH TO MAKE IT WORK/HAPPEN. 3. Regardless of what adult is in control of my class, sixth grade students know how to act and work in my class. Not doing so results in disciplinary measures. This is never negotiable. Homework is still being planned for the net few weeks- stay tuned to the Google calendar on the main page and the Remind messages for up-to-date information. A video that should have been posted last week (viewed in class today, 11/30), is found below. Have a great week! Hey everyone! I hope everyone is having a great day! Mr. K's surgery was a success- while he is not sure of the day he will return, he is happy and feeling good. He wanted me to pass along a few videos he created yesterday to keep you learning while he is home with us; your substitute teacher will be showing these videos in class; you're welcome to view them now as well! Hey everyone! I hope you're having a great week! The month of November is an interesting one...there is not a full week of classes in it! One of those reasons...parent/teacher conferences, which will be held on Wednesday, November 18th. I will be available for brief conferences on that day; if you'd like to schedule something a little longer, please contact me at your convenience so we can set up a date and time. Mathwise, we're beginning a unit on Exponents (SOL 6.5), which will be a sort of break for students from the rigor of fraction operations and methods we've studied all year. The work will be constant, but light. The learning will be vigorous, but relaxed! Mr. K will be absent Thursday and Friday of this week, to have surgery. Any disciplinary problems noted by the substitute will be dealt with swiftly, even if Mr. K will not be swift of foot for some time. Some notes: 1. Next quiz (6.5) will be Tuesdsay, November 24th. 2. Videos for use IN CLASS (no video homework this unit!!!). Feel free to use at home too! See below. 3. Other resources will be added to this post, as needed and warranted. Have a great week! Hey everyone! Welcome to the 2nd 9 Weeks! We're still studying SOL 6.16 (probability of independent/dependent events), but I wanted to post some interesting links from class. Enjoy! Remember, our quiz will be on FRIDAY! Plinko- A great probability-related game (catch it on The Price is Right, on CBS at 11am): http://phet.colorado.edu/sims/plinko-probability/plinko-probability_en.html http://www.personal.psu.edu/dpl14/java/probability/plinko/index.html http://valerieaguirre.com/plinko/ Rock, Paper, Scissors- Is THIS game an example of probability??? http://www.springlakeparkschools.org/sites/springlakeparkschools.org/files/users/nkreme/rock_paper_scissors.pdf SKUNK! http://illuminations.nctm.org/Lesson.aspx?id=956 SPECIAL NOTE: PLEASE RETURN YOUR GREEN FEDERAL SURVEY FORM ASAP! When this is returned, it means JYMS gets needed federal funding (read: money) for what we need- computers, chairs, paper, coffee...well, maybe not coffee! SPECIAL NOTE 2: Remediation sessions are held after school on WEDNESDAYS. See me if you're attending. Please ensure children are picked up from JYMS at 3:15pm. Our last "Class Notes"- from SOL 6.6b: Good day! Today we're beginning a new unit on probability (SOL 6.16), wherein we'll study the differences and similarities between independent and dependent events. Last year, students were introduced to simple probability, but now, they'll be responsible for calculating the chance of two or more events occurring, which will require the multiplication of probability ratios. With the end of the marking period quickly approaching, all missing work AND re-quiz opportunities must be settled by the end of next week. No work submitted = No credit! Video notes can be found below. Please keep in mind that video notes will be checked on WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 4th. (A video session will be held Monday, 11/2). Good day! Who likes fractions? Well, even if your answer was no, get ready for lots of fraction skills, applications, and practice. We'll spend the next few weeks focusing on SOL 6.4 and 6.6, which relate to the use of pictures and applying skills, estimation, and comprehension to real life situations, respectively. Please keep in mind- all students have the ability to re-quiz! Please refer to the re-quiz policy (previous post AND was copied/discussed in class. Note: there is a vocabulary quiz on Thursday. VIDEO NOTES: Please view and note the videos below. The due date for the 6.4 videos will be MONDAY, OCTOBER 12th, and the due date for the 6.6 videos will be THURSDAY, OCTOBER 15th. |
