Welcome to the second semester!
We're currently studying the concept of integers (SOL 6.3)- how to tell them apart from other values, how to compare and order them, and another concept- absolute value. While the standard does not indicate a need for operational understanding (performing math calculations using integers), that is my goal, by the end of the year (and now, when appropriate)...to get kids thinking of WHERE SOL 6.3 goes..how it evolves into other math concepts.
Next Quiz- Tuesday (2/9) (SOL 6.3)
Next SOL to study- SOL 6.20 (Graphing inequalities; using number lines!)
For the Future- SOL 6.11 (Coordinate Plane)
Some great math resources, found by STUDENTS!
www.wyzant.com (math resource site- has good integer content)
www.purplemath.com (I told you it was real!)
www.aaamath.com (a practice site for many math skills relevant to 6th grade standards)
ANNOUNCEMENT!
The BRT (Benchmark Review Test) is a review tool (and a test grade) that is based on data from the second benchmark test (December), is based on student need and choice, and drives our overall daily review, in preparation for the SOL, forward.
Students were given a second copy of their benchmark test data (student review sheet), and a key was created for students to see their strong and weak areas. Note: it was emphasized that this data, though relevant, is/was a "snapshot" of what happened nearly two months ago. This test has been reviewed thoroughly since then.
On February 19th, students will choose the test topics, or modules, they will use for their test. Five modules will be completed, most/all consisting of 4-5 questions. See below...
Students with- Choose
5 weak areas 0
4 weak areas 1
3 weak areas 2
2 weak areas 3
1 weak area 4
0 weak areas 5
We will continue to review relevant topics up to the BRT date, and following the BRT we will review the questions from the BRT.
